In the last week of October 1914, the Ottoman Empire went to war on the side of Germany and Austria-Hungary. The land between the Mediterranean and the Jordan was, as it had been for four hundred years, a set of Ottoman administrative districts. Within a year it was a war zone, and within four it was under British occupation, with its future already the subject of three written undertakings made while the war was on.
