This is the fifth episode of The Same Small Land, a grounded, from-the-beginning look at the Israel-Palestine conflict.
At this point we’ve followed the land of Palestine through four Ottoman centuries and left it in eighteen eighty-one, at the moment a Russian emperor was killed a very long way to the north. We’ve overviewed the Jews of the diaspora through the religious empires of Islam and Christendom. Those two stories have been running separately almost since the Romans finally cracked down on Jewish rebels and did away with Judaea in the centuries just after Christ. This is where the stories reconverge, coming together once again on the same ground, and from here they do not separate again.
